BLOOM IN EXILE (2024)

Ayotunde Jamiu Yusuff

30x50, acrylic on canvas

The artwork captures the experience of a migrant in Northern Cyprus through the Tulipa cypria flower, which is native to the region. This flower symbolizes the artist’s aspiration to establish and thrive in a new land. The broken glass around the eyes represents the judgment and mixed perceptions the artist faces from locals, highlighting the challenges of cultural and language barriers, which are further emphasized by the animation. The wilting flower, set against the wide sea, symbolizes both isolation and the struggle to manage in a new environment. The artwork expresses the artist’s feelings of displacement and the challenge of connecting with the local community.
