WASTE OF PASSION
After a couple of years and many new friendships along the way, WASTE arrived on the shores of Sitges, just a few kilometers from the city of Barcelona, reaching the end of the Mediterranean. Here, the performance became interactive, inviting locals and migrants from Barcelona to collaboratively write the last chapter of WASTE and reflect on the feelings the installation had evoked during its journey across the Mediterranean Sea.
This chapter wasn’t easy, as participants had to walk through a small forest to reach the cliff that concealed the performance. Some people stood along the railway, gazing at WASTE from afar, trying to read its statement, while others made their way down to watch the group float with the wood composing WHAT A WASTE OF PASSION.
The event took place on the 11th of September, coinciding with the National Day of Catalonia, which further connected the installation to the location and its significance. Catalonia represents one of the most evident European examples of the need for independence and the right to live life as one desires. This makes it an attractive destination for many people from around the world who are seeking the lives they envision for themselves.
In the group gathered for the performance, many moved to Barcelona inspired by its lively cultural scene. But the challenges of settling in- securing visas, finding jobs, and managing the high cost of living- quickly took priority. They felt trapped, caught between their dreams and the everyday demands of starting fresh in a new place, as well as between the love, faith and hope that had fueled their journey, the loss of these feelings along the way, and the need to rediscover what passion truly means in their lives.
